Business leaders share their experience with GSB students

Three successful business leaders shared the experiences that were responsible for accelerating their careers with GSB students at the Monash GSB Tipping Point event. Held at Caulfield Campus, the speakers focused on their pivotal career changing moments and the opportunities and learning’s that subsequently arose.

The guest speakers were Jennifer Roche, former Executive Director, Telstra, Jonathan Kaehne, partner, Accenture Australia and Simon McNamara, entrepreneur Grill’d, Boost, Viva Juice. The event moderator was Sacha Koffman, a former BCom student who has worked in several people-focused corporate and consulting roles over 13 years.

Jennifer Roche shared with students her career progression at Telstra, and the challenges she faced trying to balance career and family.

Jonathan Kaehne’s story showed the not so glamorous life of a management consultant, when he described digging in the garbage bin in overalls looking for missing data to reconstruct a database system.

Simon McNamara, today a successful entrepreneur, told students the stressful time when he took over the family business at the age of 19, and explained where and how he got the ideas for Viva Juice and Grill’d.

The Dean also shared a tipping point during his welcome address. Professor Stephen King explained to students how going to Harvard was a life-changing event for him, even though at the time it was a difficult decision to make.

Students were touched by the moderator’s honesty and candid account of a difficult time in his personal and career life. Sacha Koffman told students that he then realised the importance of reaching out to people and asking for help.

Some 190 students attended the event, making it one of the most successful events organised by the faculty. A total of 85% of attendants ranked the event as excellent or very good, and 100% of respondents would attend a similar event in the future.
